Genius Ideas for Storing Blankets

Is your blanket addiction taking up too much space in your home? I get it! And I’m here to help. Here are some fantastic ideas for storing blankets you may have never thought of.

I love blankets! I cannot walk into a store without having to look at all the different blankets they have. (And I have to force myself not to buy anymore.) I just think a home can never have too many blankets!

The only problem is that all those blankets need to be stored somewhere. Thick blankets can take up a lot of space. And since I’m not getting rid of any blankets any time soon, I’ve got to get creative when it comes to blanket storage.

Do you have this problem, too? If you have too many blankets taking up space in your home, I’m here to help with this list of blanket storage ideas.

Ideas for Storing Blankets

There are tons of ideas for storing blankets, but sometimes you have to get a little creative. First, think about the blankets you use most often and how often you need to get to them. Even in the summer, I like to have a blanket to cover up with when I’m watching Stranger Things with my daughter or reading a book. I always keep a blanket in the living room somewhere nearby so I can grab it when I need it.

Here are some ideas for storing blankets that you use often:

  • Near the couch or fireplace in a large basket
  • On a blanket ladder
  • In a cabinet, if you have built-ins, or under the TV stand
  • Draped over the back of the couch or end of the bed
  • Inside storage ottomans
  • Inside a window seat that has storage
  • Large bins inside a closet

Here are some ideas for storing blankets that you don’t use often:

  • Under the bed in storage bags
  • On a top shelf in a closet
  • In a spare bedroom closet
  • An over-the-door towel rack inside a linen closet
  • Blanket storage bags stored in the attic, basement, or garage

How to Keep Stored Blankets Smelling Fresh

  • Before storing blankets away, make sure they are clean and completely dry. Blankets that are damp can mildew and even mold over time.
  • Avoid storing blankets in damp areas, such as humid areas in your home. If you need to store blankets in a basement, make sure to have a dehumidifier running at all times.
  • Wool blankets need to be stored in open areas with a good amount of airflow, not in plastic storage bags.
  • Heirloom quilts should be hung on comforter hangers so air can pass through the fabric.
  • Place a few dryer sheets inside the folded blankets or in the tote or storage bag before storing.
  • Place an odor absorber, such as a homemade sachet inside the storage tote or bag with the blankets.

Blanket Storage Solutions

Over-the-door blanket ladder

An over-the-door blanket ladder is perfect for storing blankets in linen closets or extra bedroom closets. The blankets are stored away unseen, yet air can still flow freely through the fabric.

This is also a great way to keep blankets that are only used on special occasions folded nicely and easily accessible.

Storage ottoman

Storage ottomans can be placed at the foot of your bed, in the living room, or under a window as a window seat. They are perfect for storing blankets that you want easy access to, yet don’t want to keep out all the time.

Storage ottomans also hide throw pillows, body pillows, knee pillows, weighted blankets, and anything else you want to store away but still use occasionally.

Storage end table

Another great way to store blankets is with an end table where the lids are easily removed. You can store blankets or pillows away while also having a table for your lamp, books, decor, and a nice smelling candle!

Large basket

Large baskets by the couch are great for storing blankets you use often. The best part is that you don’t even have to fold the blanket. Just toss it right in the basket and grab it when you need it.

Any type of large basket can be used – wicker, metal, woven, etc. – whatever you prefer!

Large baskets are one of the best ideas for storing blankets because you can just toss the blankets inside the basket and it still looks good in your living room!

Blanket bag

Blanket bags are really nice for storing larger blankets such as comforters. They fit nicely in the back of closets and since they have windows you can easily see which blankets you have stored inside.

A blanket bag can easily store a large down comforter and up to 4 additional blankets, depending on the sizes of the blankets.

Space saver vacuum storage bags

Vacuum storage bags are one of my favorite ways to store larger items, including blankets. They fit nicely under the bed or on a top closet shelf. They can also be stored upright in closets or laid flat in totes stored in the basement or garage.

  • Hello from a fellow blanket hoarder 😊 Your list is great! I currently have a coat hanger (stained wood board with hooks) on the wall in my den to hang favorite and/or regularly used throw blankets. Thanks for some new ideas!

  • Good post! You have so many good ideas that will help with the precariously slanting stack at the top of my linen closet.
