Learn how to make cheap, yet pretty Christmas trees from a cardboard box! Keep reading for the step-by-step tutorial on how to make cardboard Christmas trees.
Thanksgiving has come and gone, so now it’s time to drag out the Christmas decorations! I’ve already started decorating my home for Christmas this year because my daughter just couldn’t wait. While she was decorating, I decided to make a few Christmas crafts, which I’m excited to share with you!
The first craft is my favorite, so I decided to use it for Terrie’s Christmas craft blog hop. This month, our host Terrie from Decorate & More With Tip, gave us the option to make any Christmas craft. Be sure to check out her blog for all of her beautiful Christmas crafts as well. (I love her Christmas home tours!)

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas at my house! The decorations are up, the stockings are hung by the chimney with care, and the UPS and FedEx guys visit me daily. Which means cardboard boxes galore!
I decided to use one of the boxes this year to make cardboard Christmas trees. I love how they turned out and how easy they are to make. They can be made in any size, depending on how big or small you want them. And these little cardboard Christmas trees didn’t cost me a thing to make!

The first thing I did was tear the top flap off of the cardboard box so it would be easier to work with. Then I drew a triangle on the cardboard and cut it out. Next, I traced that triangle onto the cardboard to make a second one. You’ll need 2 cardboard triangles the same size to make the top of the tree.
Next, I stuck the stick down into the cedar closet rings using a little bit of hot glue. I had to trim the stick a bit to make it fit in the circle.
I found the cedar closet rings in a box in the basement when we moved into our home. If you don’t have these and don’t want to buy any, you can make your own from a tree branch or use anything you’d like for the base.
Next, I placed the 2 cardboard triangles around the stick and hot glued them together.
Now it’s time to make the cardboard Christmas tree pretty by wrapping it with yarn. I used a green and white striped yarnhttps://amzn.to/3MCwpL3 that I had in my stash.
Start at the bottom and add a little dab of hot glue on the back of the tree. Place the end of the yarn in the hot glue and wait a second for it to dry. Then start wrapping the cardboard with the yarn to the top until it’s all covered. I found that I had to push down the yarn as I went to cover all the spaces.
Once you get to the top of the tree, add another dab of glue to hold the yarn in place.
After you’ve wrapped the entire cardboard Christmas tree with yarn, you’re all done! Then you can place it with your other Christmas decorations.
Be sure to pin my cardboard Christmas trees to remember them later, then, check out the other amazing bloggers’ Christmas crafts!

Michelle, what a cute project. I love the rustic look of your Christmas trees and they are so easy - and inexpensive to make. Thank you for a great idea.
Thank you so much!
Delightful, Michelle!
Thank you!!
Lovely and simple to make. ❤️
Thank you so much!
These are so cute and easy, Michelle. 🌝
Thank you so much!
Cute 🤩!
Thank you!!
Love, love, love, love, love these. They look so great. No one would know they are cardboard! Yours look great, but one could put little felt "ornaments" on them, or glitter or whatever. These are awesome!
Thank you so much! Dressing these trees up with felt ornaments would be a great idea. Thanks for the inspiration!
They certainly don't need it, but I was thinking they are so easy to make that giving them as gifts might require a bit of variety. :-)
This is so good and a great craft activity for kids.
Thank you so much! Yes, kids would have fun making these, too. :)
Hi. These are unique and inventive. What a wonderful idea! Love that you used real sticks! I haven't heard of cedar rings, so will have to look into those. Will try to make these this week. Craft show is over, so I have some time to make other cool stuff. :) Hope you have a wonderful day!
Thank you so much! I hope you had a good show. Maybe you can make some of these for the next one! :)
Oh man! That's a fabulous idea!! The show was great! Met some really sweet people. Hope you're doing well.
Your trees are absolutely adorable, Michelle! Those boxes can be such an annoyance and I would never have thought to repurpose them into something for Christmas! You are a genius, girl! Thank you for sharing! Now I'm off to grab some boxes out of the recycling bin!
Thank you so much! We still have a lot of boxes left over from moving, plus more coming in because of Christmas. So I agree that they can become super annoying! haha!
I love projects that repurpose things. These are so cute!
Thank you so much!
