Fall is finally here, even if it doesn’t quite feel like it here in Virginia. The first few days of fall teased us with cooler temps and less humidity. However, the mercury shot back up into the mid-80s quickly! But there are some leaves changing color and some are falling and covering the ground. So at least it’s starting to look like fall, even if it doesn’t feel like it yet.

I’ve put up a few fall decorations around the house to set the cozy fall mood. I decorated a little upstairs and in the kitchen and living room. My warmers are burning fall-scented wax melts, so it smells like fall, too!

There was still something missing – a wreath for my front door.

This month, Terrie, who hosts our monthly DIY challenges, challenged us to create something using wood. So I decided that I would create a fall wreath with a popsicle stick banner!

How to Make a Fall Wreath with a Popsicle Stick Banner

First I’ll show you how I made the wreath, then I’ll show you how I made the popsicle stick banner.

Step 1

The first thing I did was rip the fabric into strips. I like how the frayed edges show on the fabric, so I chose to rip mine. If you prefer, you can cut the fabric into strips instead. I cut little slits at the end of the fabric and then ripped the fabric into strips. The number and length of the strips will depend on how big your wreath form is. My strips were about 1 and 1/2″ wide. I cut them long enough so that I could tie them in a knot around the entire wreath form.

Step 2

After ripping, or cutting, a bunch of strips, start tying them onto the wreath, alternating between the colors.

To do this, I laid the fabric wrong side up under the wreath form. Then I folded the fabric strip over the whole side of the wreath form and tied it in a knot at the outside edge. I kept repeating this step all the way around the wreath form until I had as many strips as necessary to get a full wreath.

That’s it for the wreath part! Now let’s make the popsicle stick banner.

For the popsicle stick banner, I used 4 popsicle sticks per letter, so 16 in all. First, I cut the ends off the popsicle sticks with scissors so they would be flat along the bottom. If needed, you can sand the edges a little. I then cut the sticks to be a little longer than half a stick. Then I glued 4 sticks together using hot glue. I made 4 of these.

After the glue dried, I used the stencil to write the word “fall” on the popsicle stick banner. I wrote one letter per block, then painted the letters using black craft paint. I was going to stain the popsicle sticks first, but I didn’t have any stain on hand. However, I think either way looks fine.

After the paint dried completely, I turned the “blocks” over and glued a scrap piece of popsicle stick to the bottom of each piece. Then I glued jute twine along the top of each block, making sure they were spaced out evenly. For added security, I glued another scrap piece of popsicle stick on top of the jute twine.

Finally, I laid the fall wreath on top of the popsicle stick banner and tied the jute around the wreath from behind.

That’s it! Making a fall wreath with a popsicle stick banner takes a little bit of time, but it’s easy enough to put together. And it looks great with fall fabric colors!
