Our Family Life

Saturdays on the Porch

Welcome to the porch! Let’s sit and chat!

Happy Saturday! I hope you’ve had a good week!

We’ve had lower temps with lower humidity this week so I took advantage of it and got outside. The flower beds alongside our walkway have tons of weeds because I haven’t been able to get out there and tend to them. Since my ankle is feeling a lot better (and I get to sit down outside), I’ve been pulling weeds the past few mornings.

That also allowed me to meet a neighbor who lives across the street diagonally from us. She gave us the scoop on most of the neighbors around us and even explained that there used to be a railing around the small balcony above our front door.

She told us about the man who lived in the house for years before the owner before us. He was actually supposed to visit her that afternoon and she was going to ask if he had any pictures of the home when he lived there. Fingers crossed that he does and that he doesn’t mind sharing them with us!

Also, this week, I was able to take the glass globes down from our master bathroom lights. They looked dirty, but I couldn’t tell how dirty until I got them down. They were gross!

I soaked them in warm water with Dawn dish soap while I cleaned the rest of the bathroom and they looked so much better.

My husband has been trying to run wire in the basement so he can hook up all of the internet stuff and whatever else he’s doing down there.

While he was down there, he happened to come across a skeleton key that fits the old doors throughout the house. I love skeleton keys so that was an exciting find!

Home Update

I have great news!

The contractors finally came this week and removed part of the ceiling so they could measure the broken joists and order more. They covered the family room floor so it wouldn’t get messed up, removed the ceiling fan and some of the lights, removed the insulation and the ceiling.

In the last photo, you can see the brick, which is the outside of the house. The family room is an addition. I love the brick! I wish the wall along that side was brick. I think it would be so pretty! My husband doesn’t like that idea so much, though.

Luckily only 2 joists were broken and will need to be replaced. However, the contractor said it could take up to 10 weeks because everyone is so booked up. And he can’t guarantee that they’ll be able to start work right away after the joists come in. I was hoping to have all of this done before it starts getting cold, but that may not even be the case now. But at least it’s a start. I can only pray everything falls into place smoothly and quickly.

What’s on the menu this week:

  • Monday: Mama’s Chicken Roll-Ups, Corn, Green Beans
  • Tuesday: Tacobake Dinner Kit, Rice
  • Wednesday: Chic Fil-a
  • Thursday: Hamburgers, Mac & Cheese
  • Friday: Grilled Chicken, Baked Potatoes, Side Salad
  • Saturday: Eating Out (maybe?)
  • Sunday: Bacon, Egg & Cheese Biscuits, Hashbrowns

This week’s dessert: Fudge Brownies

My favorite posts from around the web this week:

DIY/Crafts

The Spruce is one of my favorite websites. They have everything from home cleaning and organizing tips to recipes to DIY & Crafts. This week there was an email from them with 13 clever and crafty uses for brown paper bags. My favorite brown paper bag craft is the home organizers. They’re so cute! The only problem is that there’s no link to the instructions. But they look easy enough to figure out, so hopefully, I can make some soon if I can find my paper bags.

Gardening

Since I’ve been outside pulling weeds, I’ve been thinking about edging to go along the flower beds along the front of the house. I came across a post of 25 unique lawn edging ideas and there are some really pretty ideas on there. I’m just having a hard time deciding! What type of edging do you have (or like best) along your flower beds?

This one is my favorite but it seems like it could be expensive with as many bricks as I would need. There are just too many decisions!

Fun photo of the week:

This mama deer always comes to visit. Late one night there were 2 of them in our front yard, very close to our front door. And Wednesday there was a baby deer following close behind.

She’s so pretty and doesn’t seem all that skittish. I guess she’s gotten used to us. She doesn’t let us get too close, though. Not that I’m trying. My dad and I were chased by a deer many moons ago and I’m not trying to go through that again!

This week on the blog:

In case you missed it, last week I shared a list of the best items to buy at Dollar Tree. This week, I shared a list of items to avoid buying at Dollar Tree. Both lists work together to help you save money!

Your turn

Now it’s your turn to share with me what happened to you this week! Did anything exciting happen? Any good news? Did you find any good deals? I’d love to hear!

Thank you for sharing!

  • Finally, it is going forwards! I am happy that your shelter goes to be safer, my dear Michelle.
Thank goodness it is summertime. Have a nice weekend. ??

  • I’m glad your ankle is feeling a lot better! That is fear that you’re making friends with the neighbors. I hope you’re able to see some of the old pictures of your home! The globes from your bathroom look brand new! It shows how a little soap and water (and elbow grease) can transform things! That is neat about the skeleton key! I am glad to hear the contractors made it out there. I pray the rest of it goes quicker than they anticipated. Wow the Mamas chicken roll ups look yummy! I will have to try those! Such a neat article on the brown paper bags! I especially like the idea of using them to block weeds. And I definitely did use them to cover my text books in school, way back in the day! I really love the flower bed pictures you shared. That is a catching design! We just have the regular scalloped blocks around ours. Oh I love the picture of the deer. And that is so wonderful that you saw a baby too. We have seen a baby this spring a couple of times around our place too! I haven’t been able to get good pictures though.

    • Thank you! I'm hoping the man will share his photos with us. It would be exciting to see what it looked like before.
Yes, definitely give the Mama's Chicken Rollups a try. You'll love them!
I covered my textbooks with paper bags, too. That way I could doodle all over them. haha!
The scalloped blocks around your flower beds is a good idea. I'm wanting something simple that isn't expensive yet still looks great. I'll keep that in mind. Thank you!

  • Lovely that you are meeting your neighbours. The globes look brand new after cleaning them. Hopefully the roof will get fixed without much delay. As always I enjoyed reading the menu.
    Have a wonderful weekend ?

    • Me, too! I don't want to live in a neighborhood where the neighbors are all stuck up and rude. lol! Thank you for reading! I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

  • So great that your ankle is healing and you’re feeling better. That globe looks brand new now that you cleaned it. Well your house is coming along and it’s great when contractors show up LOL Love that deer  Thanks for sharing the Spruce, I’m checking them out, I used to love to cover my books with brown paper bag, haven’t done that in years. Great blog post. xoxo

    • Thank you! It's a lot easier to get around now and do more. :)
Haha! Yes! I'm glad they finally decided to show up. He said they're booked up and had an opening, but still! I just hope it's done before Christmas.
I love the Spruce! They always share the best ideas. I used to cover my books with paper bags, too so I could doodle on them. LOL
      Have a great weekend!

  • I’m glad to hear you’re feeling better!
Hopefully y’all have good neighbors lol!

  • Michelle, Glad your ankle injury is healing. Hope the furnishings are going well and love that deer. ?

  • Hello Michelle,
I've been out of touch so did not realise you'd hurt your ankle. Glad it's getting better. Sounds like you have moved recently as well and are doing a fixer-upper - am I right. All the best with your endeavours. I just love watching those shows and seeing the before and after scenarios. It must be very rewarding when it's all finished.
I think I'll just sit for a while on the lovely porch depicted above!

    Have a blessed week! :-)

  • Happy Saturday Michelle.
Glad to know things are moving along well and the contractors were finally able to make it by.
    That’s great news!
Hope you have a great weekend! (:
