Saturdays on the Porch

Welcome to the porch! Let’s sit a spell and chat!

Welcome back to the porch! I’m so glad you guys loved last week’s post! Thank you for the feedback and the positive comments to keep this series going. It’s a lot of fun to just sit and chat sometimes and not have to be so serious.

Also, I wanted to thank everyone for their kind comments about my ankle. It’s slowly healing and the pain is just about gone. Now it only hurts on the sides of my ankle if I move my foot to the side, so I’m keeping a brace on so it doesn’t move sideways. The bruising is still around my toes, but it’s going away, thank goodness. That looks kind of weird!

Since I’ve been trying to stay off my foot, nothing much hasn’t been done this week, either.

Here’s something interesting that happened this week. The home’s previous owner left tons of boxes in the basement, so my daughter and I started going through them (I sat in the chair while she opened the boxes). There were a lot of boxes full of books, mostly political stuff, and uninteresting nonfiction. But, there were quite a few that I kept out for myself and a lot of classics that will be good for my daughter to read.

The photo on the right shows the shelves that were piled up with boxes. The boxes in the middle of the floor are the ones we went through.

Anyway, we came across 4 or 5 boxes full of dishes, glasses, and coffee mugs and there were some other kitchen items in there. Two boxes we had to throw away because they weren’t taped and there were mice droppings inside. But we did come across an adorable canister set!

Isn’t that so pretty?

Another interesting thing we found was a binder that had information about the home in it. The owner had also kept about a year’s worth of gas receipts so we could see how much he was paying for gas each month. They called the home “Boxwood Manor” back then and I’m assuming it’s because there were boxwoods lining the front walkway as well as the front of the house.

Also, there were papers with photos from the real estate agent they purchased the home from. Take a look at the dining room and formal living room. It looks so fancy! (I’m kind of loving that dining room wallpaper!)

While going through the boxes in the basement, we came across two boxes of drapes. They are the drapes that were in these rooms! And my husband was in the attic and came across the valances, too! How cool to have something original to the home!

Home Update

Not too much happened with updating the home this week. We did buy some curtains for our bedroom, but they just aren’t long enough and I hate the way they look. So we’ll return those or use them in a different room while I keep searching for the perfect curtains. Or learn how to sew my own.

Before we moved in, I painted our daughter’s bedroom. She picked out the color she wanted, which is similar to our bedroom color, but brighter. You can’t really tell from the photos, though. Also, I painted the inside of her closets (she has two closets in her room so she’s super excited about that!) Together we put down the rug that she picked out and her bed that she also picked out.

Before
After

The funny thing about the bed is that the instructions said it should only take 30 minutes to put together. It took us almost 3 hours! I can only assume they had Nascar’s pit crew to put theirs together in 30 minutes.

What’s on the menu this week:

This Week’s Dessert: Chocolate Ice Cream Cones

Crock Pot Chicken & Stuffing with Green Beans

My favorite posts from around the web this week

Decor Inspiration:

Since I’ve been sitting around waiting on my ankle to heal, I’ve been stalking scrolling through Pinterest for home décor ideas. I came across this photo of a porch and I’ve been dreaming of it ever since. Our side porch off the family room is similar to the photo, except the door is closer to the right side and the porch entrance is on the right side.

Doesn’t it look so cozy?

DIY/Crafts:

Also while on Pinterest, I came across a crochet pattern for a really cute summer tote bag. I started working on it a little each afternoon while catching up on Little People Big World episodes. (I just love keeping up with Zach and Tori!) I’m not doing the same colors, though. My tote will be white with a leaf green color.

I thought it would be a great bag to take to the Farmer’s Market or Aldi when I can finally get out of the darn house!

Book of the week:

One of the books we found in the basement was A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving. It was one of the first books we pulled out and I couldn’t wait to start reading it. I started reading it this week and there are some parts that have made me laugh out loud, something books don’t usually do.

If you’ve read this book before, I’d love to know your thoughts. Just no spoilers because I’m not done yet. Haha!

You can find it on Amazon here.

Description from Amazon:

I am doomed to remember a boy with a wrecked voice—not because of his voice, or because he was the smallest person I ever knew, or even because he was the instrument of my mother’s death, but because he is the reason I believe in God; I am a Christian because of Owen Meany.

In the summer of 1953, two eleven-year-old boys—best friends—are playing in a Little League baseball game in Gravesend, New Hampshire. One of the boys hits a foul ball that kills the other boy’s mother. The boy who hits the ball doesn’t believe in accidents; Owen Meany believes he is God’s instrument. What happens to Owen after that 1953 foul ball is extraordinary.

Fun photo of the week:

Last week I shared a photo of our cat Amber, and this week I’m sharing one of our cat Oatmeal. Oatmeal is 14 years old and has never really been the cat who loves to lay in windows. She’s never been interested in birds or outside things.

Since moving into the new house, Oatmeal loves to sit at the front door and stare out. She’ll sit there for the longest time just watching. I have no idea what she’s looking at or what she’s thinking. Maybe she’s wondering why she can’t go into that large room!

This week on the blog:

I didn’t have the time or energy to do any crafts or DIYs this week, other than starting the crocheted tote. However, if you missed it, Friday I shared a list of my favorite items to buy at Dollar Tree to save money.

Next week I’ll be sharing a list of the items to avoid buying from Dollar Tree, so stay tuned for that!

I’m so glad you joined me on the porch again this week! Now it’s your turn to share! What happened to you this week? Did you come across anything fun and interesting you’d like to share? I’d love to hear about it!

Thank you for sharing!

  • Your house has cozy vibes! Reminds me of the types of houses I would see in country home magazine ?

  • Parece como si hubieses ido a un mercado de las pulgas. Los recipientes realmente muy decorativos y tu nueva casa se ve muy acogedora. Tienen un gusto exquisito para la decoración de interiores. Una narración muy interesante de fin de semana. Saludos.

  • Oatmeal is beautiful :) She's the same age as Luna, who for the first time in her life chased a bird she saw on the TV screen yesterday evening. These older kitties are full of surprises!

    • Thank you! Aww..how cute! It's so funny how they seem set in their ways and then all of a sudden they do something to completely surprise you. :)

  • The stuff left behind reminds me of my grandmas house. She had these huge boxes from my aunts house. I got to looking through them one day and found some pretty weird stuff... lol! I’m glad you found something nice and useful!

  • Woah those kitchen containers are so pretty! Can't believe someone would have left them behind, I could never! ?

    • Right?! That's what I thought, too. I'm so surprised at a lot of the things that were left behind. But that's okay, because they're still being used. Lol!! :D

  • Enjoyed this post. Glad your ankle is better. Enjoyed reading about the progress in the house. Also love the weekly menu that you put up, gives me ideas.

    • Thank you! I'm glad the menu gave you some ideas. It's hard coming up with dinner ideas every night. :)

  • Thanks for sharing. The house is coming along really well. It’s so cool to find that old history of your house in those boxes.

    • Thank you! I was surprised to find so much stuff, but even more surprised to find the original drapes. So cool!

  • I really love the title Saturdays on the Porch and the content is great. What a find, those canisters are so beautiful, and everything else, the books etc. so great to have that.
