Our Family Life

Welcome to Our New Home!

We just purchased a new home! Follow along with us as we fix up our new “old” house!

I’ve been MIA and I apologize.

But I have a really good excuse!

We finally found and purchased a new home!

Well, it’s new to us, anyway. It’s actually an older Colonial-style home built in the ’40s. There are 2 new additions added to the home – a kitchen and a family room.

Of course, there’s quite a bit of fixing up to do and I cannot wait to start! As you can see in the photos, the shutters need to be repaired and repainted. I cannot wait to start working on the outside of this home to give it some major curb appeal!

Would you like a tour? Sure you would! Come on in!

Welcome to our new home!

Walking up the walkway from the street you can see new boxwood shrubs that were planted and the solar lights along the path. You can also see that I have some weeding and mulching to do. Too bad they didn’t add new mulch when they replanted new boxwoods!

Front of our new home

As you walk through the front door, you see the stairs directly in front of you.

To your left (the first picture) is the formal living room. The door leads out to a covered side porch. (Another project I can’t wait to take on! It needs to be repainted and I can’t wait to hang some ferns!)

To your right is the dining room. There are 2 big windows to let in a lot of natural light.

Let’s take a left and go into the formal living room, which is currently full of tools because we’re refinishing our bedroom floors and painting our daughter’s room before we officially move in.

It’s been quite chilly in this room so far, so I’m hoping that’s a good thing during summer!

Since we’re not “fancy formal” people, our plan is to use this room for my craft room/office. So I can’t wait to have space to make all the things!

Over to the right side of the house and through the dining room is the kitchen. Honestly, the kitchen and family room are what sold me on the house. Mostly because of all the windows and all the natural light that comes in during the day.

In the first photo on the left is where we’ll put a kitchen table. Right now a blanket is being used as our table, so it’s like we have a picnic whenever we get to eat there. Fun memories!

Off the kitchen is a Butler’s Pantry, which gives me even more storage! (I’m a little over-excited about all the storage space in this house!) On the wall to the right of the Butler’s Pantry is another pantry. (Yes – MORE storage!!)

Across from the Butler’s Pantry is the back door, which leads out to a nice-sized deck. There’s a small closet by the back door, which is perfect for cleaning supplies!

Now let’s go into the family room, which is another addition to the home.

When you walk into the family room from the kitchen, you see the wall with the fireplace. On the opposite side of the room is a wall of built-ins. I’m not sure what they had in the center – maybe an old TV with a VCR? (Please tell me I’m not the only one who remembers what a VCR is!)

This is my favorite wall in the whole house! I love all the windows and all that natural light!

The doors lead out to the back deck.

Let’s go back inside now and see what’s upstairs.

Walking back through the living room and by the kitchen, we come to a small hallway that leads back to the front of the house. The door directly in front leads to the basement. There’s also a door to the right which leads to a small room and a guest bathroom. I plan to use the small room as a homeschool room until my daughter graduates.

At the top of the stairs is a little sitting area. I thought it would be cute to have 2 comfy chairs in each corner. What would you do with that space? I welcome any ideas!

Through the door beside the “sitting area” is the smallest bedroom, which we’re going to turn into an office. My husband has been working from home a lot so an office is much needed.

Around the corner and at the opposite end of the hall is my daughter’s bedroom. She’s super excited because it’s way bigger than her current bedroom.

Plus, she has 2 closets! Which is a good thing because she has WAY more clothes than I do, so she needs more space.

Another added bonus for my daughter – her own bathroom!

She’s already made her plans for the bathroom – remove the tub and have a huge walk-in shower. I love that idea!

From my daughter’s room and down the hallway is our master suite. (There’s also a really large attic. Which means more storage!!)

When you go through the master bedroom suite door, the walk-in cedar closet is right in front of you. For some reason, there are paint splatters on the floor, but we are refinishing those.

The closet goes back and wraps around to the left. The shelving is a little odd so we’ll probably redo all of that at some point.

The master bedroom floors are definitely in need of refinishing. The realtor said the bedroom was smaller and where those weird wood pieces are on the floor was where the wall actually was. They expanded the bedroom and added the closet, but never fixed the floor. (The walls will be painted, too.)

Across the small hallway from the bedroom door is the master bathroom. It needs updating, but that’s a project for later. I’m done remodeling bathrooms for a while. They’re a pain!

At least there’s a walk-in shower and it has a seat! I guess my daughter can use my shower and I can soak in her tub.

That’s all for upstairs! Now let’s go back down and tour the basement.

Once you get down the steps to the basement, there’s a room to the right. I’m not loving the carpet, so hopefully, that can be replaced later on. But…all those shelves equal more storage!

I thought it would be fun to turn this area into a game room. My daughter put all of our video games and board games on the shelves already!

When you leave that room, you walk through another small room, which leads to the laundry room. Another room that needs a major update sooner rather than later.

There’s a door beside the laundry room that leads to another part of the basement. The owners left a lot of boxes in that area of the basement. I can’t wait to go through them all! One person’s trash is another person’s treasure!

The tour of our new home is finally over! I hope you enjoyed coming along with me!

I have so many projects planned and I can’t wait to share them all with you!

This is a lot more house than I’m used to so it will take me a little bit to adjust. We haven’t officially moved in yet. We wanted to get the master bedroom floor refinished and the walls painted first.

Stay tuned next week for another reason why we haven’t been able to move in yet. Hint: It’s not exactly a good reason…
