Learn how to create a beautiful rustic Valentine’s frame out of a thrift store picture frame.
Last weekend was a horrible weekend for me. Leroy, my Shih Tzu, passed away early Saturday morning, which was his 11th birthday.
He got sick the weekend before, throwing up for 2 days straight. We took him to the vet, but they couldn’t find anything wrong. The vet said, “Sometimes they just don’t feel good.”
I cannot describe the pain I feel over losing Leroy. I’m sure all you fur mamas understand what I mean. I was his human. Everywhere I went, Leroy was right behind me. If I left the house without him, he was the only one super happy to see me when I returned. He just made my life complete.
Now let me move on to today’s DIY before I start ugly crying again like I did all weekend.

A few years ago, my mom and I were at a thrift sale held by a local church, and I came across this old rustic picture frame.
Immediately I fell in love with the rustic wooden frame. The tin piece inside? Not so much. But since the frame was less than a dollar I knew I could remove that tin piece.
I have to say, though, that whoever took the time to create that picture in the tin did a really good job. That takes a lot of patience. I’ve done something similar by using a nail and hammer to punch holes in an old soup can. It’s a little time consuming and I only created a few holes!
Let me show you how I turned this thrifted frame into a rustic Valentine’s frame.
On the backside of the frame, you can see that there are just old nails holding the tin piece in.
I carefully pulled the nails back and removed the tin. A few of the nails did break because they were so old.
Next, I laid the tin piece on the fabric and cut around it leaving about 2″ all the way around.
This works the same way for the backing of any type of frame.
After that, I placed the tin covered in fabric back into the wooden frame. I pulled the fabric tight and pushed the nails back down to hold it in place.
After making sure the fabric of the rustic Valentine’s frame was pulled tight and looked good, I printed out the XOXO printable on brown Kraft paper.
I was going to age white paper with tea, but I didn’t have time to go through all that. I’ll just save that idea for another project later.
I ripped all the edges of the Kraft paper to give it a more worn look.
Last, I placed the XOXO printable in the center of the frame and then placed small pieces of masking tape on each end to keep it in place.
To me, the masking tape just made it look all the more rustic.
Decorate! The rustic Valentine’s frame is all complete so it’s time to find a place for it.

I love this! A rusty heart is full proof of love! ❤️????
Thank you!! What a nice quote! :)
Sorry to hear about losing your fur baby. They are part of the family and it is hard when they pass. He is now over the rainbow and looking down at you! Keep busy!
Thank you for your comforting words. They mean a lot!
I am so sorry you lost your precious Leroy ? The rustic Valentine’s frame is so cute ♥️
Thank you! It has been really hard without him here by my side.
Thank you so much!
I'm so sorry for your loss. And thank you for sharing this precious idea too. Prayers for all of you.
Thank you for your comforting words and prayers!
You’re so welcome.
Absolutely Michelle. I hope you're all doing ok. I understand.
We are doing better. It's been a really hard week for me. Trying to get used to him not being around has been difficult. Thank you!
I think of you daily and pray Michelle. I can emphasize so much.
Awww so sorry about your precious doggie. Love the rustic frame and what you did with it. Happy Valentine xoxo
Thank you! I miss him so much! Today has been the first day I haven't cried - yet.
Thank you! I do love the way the frame turned out. xoxo!
I'm so sorry about Leroy...I still miss my cats and it's been years. Sometimes I still feel they are hanging around...other times I feel they are waiting for me in some sort of afterlife. Weird your vet just said "sometimes they just don't feel good" ???
Thank you! I completely understand about your cats. I lost my cat a few years ago and I swear I can still hear him sometimes. I thought it was weird the vet said that, too. They didn't even do x-rays or anything, but gave him pain meds. Not understanding that at all!
Well, eleven is up there for dogs, and I'm sure he had an amazing life with you all--he was loved, safe, and warm. (I have had lots of issues with vets in the past. I almost didn't want to adopt more pets after my terrible experiences with vets, but then I rescued and socialised the former ferals that I have now. I still have issues with them, even now.)
So sorry to hear about Leroy. :(
Thank you! It hasn't been an easy week.
Our dog was hit a few years ago. I definitely understand your loss. I’m sorry Michelle!
I'm sorry to hear that. It's so hard losing them! Thank you.
Hug!
Hug back! Thank you!
You’re welcome!
I’m so really sorry for Leroy ?? That’s the saddest day from having a four leg companion ?
The frame is very lovely ?
Thank you! It's definitely been really hard. :(
This is so cute. What a great idea to re-use an old frame. I'm so sorry about Leroy. Losing a pet is heartbreaking!
Thank you! It was so quick and easy to put together, too.
Thanks! It really is. This has been such a hard week.
