Primitive Wreath Ornament

Learn how to make a primitive wreath ornament from a mason jar lid!

This week I’m kicking off my Christmas crafts and DIYs! I just can’t wait any longer!

Christmas is my favorite time of the year to decorate for, and for the past few years the holiday season has become my favorite. I’ve already started watching Christmas movies on Hallmark, although I’m limiting myself to one a day so I don’t get sick of Christmas before it actually gets here.

Am I the only one that wants to go ahead and put up the Christmas tree?

Today is also the first Wednesday of the month, which means a new DIY challenge hosted by Terrie from Decorate & More With Tip.

Our challenge for this month is a No Spend Christmas Home Décor Challenge. We were to shop our homes and use items we already had to make something Christmasy. It was so much fun to come up with something with items I already had! I decided to turn a mason jar lid into a primitive wreath ornament.

First I’ll share my primitive wreath ornament tutorial with you, then I’ll share inspiration from other great bloggers that participated in this month’s DIY challenge.

How to make a primitive wreath ornament from a mason jar lid

What you need:

• Mason jar lid – all you need is the ring
• Fabric scraps
• Jute cord or ribbon
• Scissors

What you do:

Step 1

First, you need to cut your fabric into strips. I cut 21 strips about 8″ long and about 1″ wide.

To get the primitive look, cut a little slit on one side of the fabric, then rip it all the way across. This leaves the little scraggly pieces. Or if you prefer a cleaner look, just cut the fabric instead of ripping.

Step 2

Fold the fabric in half, then place it under the edge of the mason jar ring. Next, put the ends of the fabric strip up through the loop and pull tight to make a knot.

Repeat this step with all the fabric strips all the way around the mason jar lid ring.

Step 3

Add jute twine or ribbon to hang the primitive wreath ornament.

I attached jute twine to mine the same way I attached the fabric strips.

Step 4

Finally, fan out the pieces of fabric all the way around the primitive wreath ornament. Just grab the fabric scrap ends and pull them apart to make the wreath appear fuller.

Now hang your primitive wreath ornament from your Christmas tree or anywhere you wish!

That’s all there is to it! These are so easy to make and the only time-consuming part is cutting all the fabric strips. However, you can cut a bunch out at one time, and watch a Hallmark Christmas movie as you put your wreaths together.
