You’ll never believe how easy it is to make floating Halloween candles! And it’s a great way to upcycle toilet paper rolls!
I finally got out of my crafting funk so I decided to make one last Halloween DIY. It’s another super easy one that kids can help with – especially the painting. And even if you’re not crafty, you can still put this together!
As I was stalking Pinterest one night I came across something similar to these floating Halloween candles. They had painted their “candles” white, which also looked really good. However, I wanted something different and a little more Halloween candle-ish.
So I decided to save some more toilet paper rolls after making my toilet paper roll pumpkin, and turn them into floating Halloween candles.

Add hot glue around the top of the toilet paper roll. Just go around the entire roll making lines in random places to look like dripping wax. Set it aside and let the glue completely dry.
After the glue has dried, paint the entire toilet paper roll, plus the glue. I used black for my Halloween floating candles, but you can use any color. I think it would even be cool to paint the toilet paper roll black and the hot glue red. Or you can paint it white and reuse it for Christmas, too.
Let the paint completely dry.
Cut two long pieces of fishing line per floating Halloween candle. Use a sewing needle to thread the fishing line through the toilet paper roll on opposite sides from each other.
Criss-crossing the fishing line like this will support the tealight candle and allow you to hang it from the ceiling.
Set a battery-operated tealight candle on top of the crisscrossed fishing line.
Next, hang the floating Halloween candle from the ceiling using a pushpin or tack. Or if the weather is nice, you can hang them from tree limbs outside.
However, do not hang these outside in the rain because they will ruin if they get wet.
I love how these floating Halloween candles turned out. I wish I had a covered porch to hang a bunch of them from. That would look so spooky!
The pictures are terrible. No matter where I hung these floating Halloween candles I just could not get a good picture. But I hope you at least get the idea of what they look like.
And I promise that from a distance you can’t see the fishing line. I took close up photos so you can see it in my pictures.

Thank you so much!!
These are adorable! It amazes me how many uses there are for those little battery operated tea light candles. Don't you think?
I agree with you -- this would be a super spooky decoration if you hung a bunch of them under a covered porch for Halloween. Kids would probably enjoy the creative fun too! ;)
P.S. I'm glad you are out of your craft funk. I think our creative sides need a rest now & then too!
Thank you so much! I know what you mean! I'm so glad Dollar Tree has so many because I'm always grabbing them and using them for something. :)
Thank you! I agree- sometimes our minds just need to shut down and do nothing for a little bit, just like our bodies.
