Tin Can Vase DIY for Fall

Do you have some extra tin food cans lying around waiting to be recycled? Why not repurpose them into a tin can fall vase instead? Keep reading for full instructions on a frugal DIY decor idea for your home.

At the beginning of the pandemic, we stocked up on a lot of canned goods because we had no idea what was going to happen. To be honest, I’m glad our stay-at-home order wasn’t extremely long because I was getting sick of green beans and corn.

One night while I was pouring a can of green beans into a pot to cook, I kept thinking, “What can I do with this can?”

Yes, I am that person. Don’t judge. (And don’t watch the TV show Hoarders because I might be on there one day with a house full of household items that I will repurpose “someday”.)

Finally, after some careful thought, I decided to turn that green bean can into a tin can vase!

How to make a tin can vase

What you need:

• Empty and clean tin can – such as green beans or corn
• Craft paint in white and black
• Paintbrush
• Burlap ribbon (I got mine at Dollar Tree)
• Thinner ribbon (similar here)
• Wooden pumpkin sticker from Dollar Tree
• Raffia (Also from Dollar Tree)
• Hot glue gun (my favorite one here)

What you do:

Step 1

Make sure your can is clean and dry before you start!

After cleaning the tin can, paint it white (or whatever color you choose). I just used regular craft paint for this and painted the entire outside of the can.

I painted mine with two coats, but one coat is fine, too. It just depends on how you want it to look.

Step 2

After the paint from the first step has dried, paint the top and bottom rims of the can black. This is an optional step and for some reason, I forgot to take a picture of it. But, you can see it in the next step.

I found this cute burlap ribbon at Dollar Tree a while back. The lace in the center just stood out to me and I thought it was so pretty!

Put 2 dots of hot glue on the back of your tin can vase where the ends of the burlap ribbon will go. Wrap the burlap around the entire can, and hot glue it to the top of the ribbon on the backside of the can where you started.

Here you can see the top of bottom rims of the tin can vase painted black.

Step 4

This is another optional step, but I wanted to dress up my burlap ribbon a little more. To do that, I wrapped a thinner piece of green checked ribbon around the center of the burlap.

Step 5

To add the pumpkin decoration to the tin can vase, I used a small wooden pumpkin sticker that I had leftover from a Dollar Tree DIY project that I made last year. The sticker wasn’t very sticky so I used a little bit of hot glue to get it to stay.

Step 6

For a cute little touch, hot glue a small bow made out of raffia to the top of the pumpkin, just under the stem.

Step 7

Finally, add some faux mums from Dollar Tree to your tin can vase and add it to your fall decor.

Making a tin can vase for fall is such a frugal way to use up those tin cans. And it looks so pretty with the rest of the fall decor!
