Painted Wood Blocks for Fall

Scrap wood makes the perfect DIY fall project. Just cut a few pieces into small blocks and turn them into painted wood blocks for fall! Keep reading to see how it’s done.

My husband has a ton of scrap wood that he’s been wanting to get rid of. Lucky for me while he was playing around with his saw, he cut some small blocks from one of his scrap boards for me earlier this year.

Some of you may remember that I used a few of those wood blocks to make painted wood blocks for Easter. I had so much fun making those that I decided to make some for fall, too!

These painted wood blocks are so easy to make and you can change the words to anything you want. I chose to write “I love fall most of all” on mine, but there are so many other fall sayings you could use.

Painted Wood Blocks for Fall

What you need:

• Wood blocks (Jenga blocks work, too)
• Craft paint
• Sandpaper
• Letter stamps (optional)
• Raffia (Dollar Tree or here)

What you do:

Step 1

If you are using scrap wood boards for this project, then you will need to cut the board into blocks. The size is up to you, however, for reference, a Jenga block is 0.59″ × 0.98″ × 2.95″.

Sometimes you can get lucky and find these blocks at Dollar Tree.

Step 2

Next, paint the blocks whatever color you wish. I chose to paint mine white so the letters would show up better.

Also, I only used one coat of paint for the painted wood blocks because I wanted the wood to show through. Let the paint dry completely.

After the paint has dried, lightly sand the along the edges of the wood block with sandpaper.

Step 3

Use the wood stamps to write the words on the painted wood blocks. If you are better with free-hand writing, then you can do that if you choose. I’m just not that talented.

Tip: Start at the end of the block with the last letter of the word and work backward. I found this to be so much easier to fit the words on the block and not run out of room.

Step 4

After the letters have dried on the painted wood blocks, stack them all together. Tie a piece of raffia (or twine or ribbon) around one edge of the blocks.

I wrapped raffia around all of the blocks twice, then tied it into a bow in the front.

Now you can add your painted wood blocks to your fall decor!

This is such an easy and fun project to do. And they look so pretty!
