Best Things to Buy in August
August is a month that falls in between two big sales holidays, but that doesn’t mean you can’t find some great deals. Check out this list of the best things to buy in August to help keep money in your pocket all year.
July’s Independence Day sales are behind us now and Labor Day sales aren’t coming up until next month. So what are the best things to buy in August to help you save money this year?
Retailers are desperate to get summer items out the door this month to make room for cold-weather supplies. The temperatures will still be warm enough for a few weeks to enjoy all the stuff you can get on sale.
For me, the best things to buy in August are back-to-school supplies. Even though we homeschool and don’t need a lot of supplies, I still love to stock up on notebooks, pencils and pens, and printer paper. Plus I can use a lot of things in my office, too.
Don’t forget to use Rakuten when shopping online to get cashback and save even more!!

Back-to-school supplies: No matter what school looks like for you this year, this is the best month to stock up on back-to-school supplies. Even if you don’t have kids going back to school, you can still take advantage of the sales for yourself. Look for huge savings at department stores such as Target and office supply stores such as Staples and Office Depot/Office Max.
Also, be sure to check to see if your state participates in the tax-free holiday to save even more. You can find the full list of 2020 tax-free holidays by state here.
Outdoor stuff: Patio furniture and outdoor maintenance products go on sale as summer comes to a close. Grab some new patio furniture for next year while you can get a nice discount. Home Depot has dropped their prices on patio furniture plus they’re offering free shipping right now. Also, look for price drops on lawn mowers this month.
Summer apparel: Now’s the perfect time to grab amazing deals on summer clothing, shoes, and swimwear. Retailers are trying to get these items off the shelves to make room for fall/winter apparel. Expect discounts as high as 75% off this month. Check JC Penney, Kohl’s, and Old Navy for the best deals.
College supplies: Even if dorms are closed this year, you can still grab some great deals on dorm furniture. So far the best deals I’ve seen have been at Bed, Bath, & Beyond, JC Penney, and Target. Also, be sure to check dollar stores for simple storage and organizing caddies and supplies.
Outdoor toys: With summer coming to an end, playground sets and outside toys start going on sale. If you’re looking for some great deals on outdoor items, check Overstock.com and Wayfair.
Early Labor Day sales: Even though Labor Day isn’t until September 7, 2020, some sales start showing up at the end of August. For the past two years, Overstock.com has taken up to 70% off decor, bedding, furniture, and outdoor items.
In-season produce: Fruits to look out for this month include apples, cantaloupe, blueberries, apricots, figs, kiwi, peaches, plums, strawberries, watermelon, and mangoes. Vegetables include tomatoes, squash, corn, cucumbers, lettuce, peppers, zucchini, eggplant, and green beans.
What’s on your list of the best things to buy in August? What are you excited to purchase this month?

I adore your “Best Things To Buy In ___,” lists! You really get me thinking about items on sale I wouldn’t have considered before. A great deal is hard to beat when it’s something we really needed. (Or will definitely need soon)
Funny you should mention about the summer stuff being on deep sales, but yet there’s still plenty of hot weather to come to get use out of it this summer. I was just thinking about that this very morning!
I’ll admit though, whew, I sure am looking forward to those crisp, cool Fall temps! The humidity has been outrageous again this year. Ugh, it makes being outdoors so uncomfortable. ?
Thank you my friend for another amazing post. You’re awesome for saving us some serious $! Sending BIG hugs and much love right to you. ♥
I’m so glad you find them helpful!
I agree – the humidity has been just terrible this year. I’m looking forward to those wonderful fall temps, too. It’s just around the corner! 😀
Hallelujah, my friend, hallelujah! ?
I always look forward to your monthly best buy posts, Michelle! You always think of things I never would have, and remind me of those I usually forget! Thank you for doing all the work! 🙂
You’re welcome! I’m so glad you find them helpful. 🙂 As I’m writing the posts I’m usually reminding myself of things I need, too. 😀
I am such a sucker for school supplies! Can you ever have enough freshly sharpened pencils or never-used crayons?
I’m so glad I’m not the only one who feels that way! 😀
I need to go price check the Patio Furniture! We’ve been using camp chairs so long they sun-rotted, haha!
Haha! Now is the time to find some great deals! Probably even better towards the end of the month when stores get more desperate to get rid of them. 🙂
Wow, that’s great that you homeschool already. No need to stress over whether to send your daughter back to school or not!
Exactly! We started 2 years ago and I’m so thankful we did! Especially with what’s going on right now.
Great tips, I always look for summer outfits in August, I didn’t think about patio furniture and maintenance products, great list, thank you Michelle <3
Thank you! I’m glad you found it helpful. 🙂 I really need to start shopping for summer clothes. I barely have any and the ones I do have are so old! 😀
Thanks
I always stock up on school supplies but didn’t know about the rest. Thank you Michelle!

Hi there Michelle! Your shares are always tops! For a some time now, I could only see how people had lost their collective consumer power! Thank you for your constant encouragement. Your share here is a big consumer power booster!????
Thank you so much! I’m so glad they’re helpful. ?
Cool ideas:)

This is great!! End of season or holiday sales are the best/least expensive ?
Thank you so much! 🙂
Thanks so much for sharing this list!
You’re welcome! Glad you found it helpful.
I clicked on Home Depot and got lost! It has been so hard to find outdoor furniture with the COVID stuff.
Oh no! The Home Depot website is a little hard to navigate. I love the store, but not the site so much. I’ve seen a lot of outdoor furniture online at great prices, but not so much in stores.
Another most useful list, Michelle.
Thank you so much!
Definitely have noticed in-season produce is priced in my favor!!❤️❤️❤️
thanks for sharing all of these items friend!!
You’re welcome! Our local grocery stores haven’t had the best produce lately, so I’m glad the Farmer’s Market finally opened back up!
Oh yes I love a good farmer’s market…just seems so charming!!❤️
