Laundry scent boosters leave your laundry smelling great, but store-bought ones are expensive and full of artificial scents and ingredients. Check out this laundry scent booster DIY and make your own at home!
Whenever I go to the grocery store, I love to go down the laundry detergent aisle. There’s just something so refreshing about all of those fresh scents mixing together. It almost makes me want to rush home and do laundry. (Notice I said almost.)
The only problem with store-bought laundry scent boosters is that they are full of artificial fragrances and ingredients. And their only purpose is to add scent to your laundry.
That’s why I decided to make my own laundry scent booster. It’s free of artificial fragrances and there are no weird ingredients. Also, it is all-natural and super easy to make. Not to mention it’s cheap to make and you can add your own personal scent!
This laundry scent booster DIY leaves your clothes smelling like you just stepped out of a luxury spa! But you can personalize it to make it your own. I’ll include some essential oil combos to give you some inspiration.

Epsom salt dissolves completely in water and helps soften clothes.
Baking soda is a natural deodorizer and cleanser and it softens the water. Also, it helps to regulate the pH level when rinsing by keeping it from being too alkaline or acidic.
Essential oils are known for their antifungal, antimicrobial, antibacterial, deodorizing, and cleaning properties. All of these make them perfect for laundry use!
Eucalyptus oil has a refreshing, clean, fresh scent.
Lavender oil has a calming and relaxing scent.

In a small bowl or measuring cup, mix all the ingredients together. Let them air dry for a while before adding them to an airtight container. (I like to use a mason jar.)
To use: Add 2 tablespoons (or 6 teaspoons) to your washing machine before adding clothes. Use your normal laundry detergent and wash as usual.
Tea tree: Fights against mold and mildew. It’s also great for immune support. Tea tree is perfect for cleaning laundry after someone has been sick. If you accidentally leave a load in the washer too long, add a few drops of tea tree essential oil and rewash. It removes that moldy, mildew scent.
Citrus oils: Lemon, orange, grapefruit, bergamot, and mandarin work great at cleaning dirt and grime as well as deodorizing. They also offer a fresh, clean, uplifting scent to your laundry.
Peppermint: Offers an energizing, fresh scent. Also works great in the laundry due to its antiviral, antibacterial, and antimicrobial properties.
Lemongrass: Offers a soothing, comforting scent.
Rosemary: Helps disinfect and boost immunity because it has antibacterial, antifungal, and antimicrobial properties.
Basil: Fresh, crisp scent. Pairs really well with lemon.
I love using the laundry scent booster DIY in my laundry. It makes my clothes smell amazing and I know they are coming out clean and fresh. There are no harmful chemicals getting into my family’s clothes, keeping us all safe and healthy.

I usually add a couple of drops of lavender oil with the environment-friendly laundry liquid I use, but I'll try your suggestion.
That's a good idea, too. ?
Sounds like a great idea. I don't use fabric softeners because of all the chemicals, so I'll give your alternative a try!
Thank you! I hope you enjoy it! :)
Wow, this is very interesting. Thank you for sharing how to make our own laundry Scents Michelle.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked it! :)
You're welcome dear ??♥️.
Oh how wonderful, Michelle! I guess I never though to use essential oils in my laundry room but it makes perfect sense! Thanks for the inspiration and recipe!
You're welcome! I love how essential oils make my laundry smell. Plus I can change the scents anytime I want. :)
Oh Michelle - I LOVE LOVE LOVE this post! I had no idea that baking soda would naturally soften the water.
I really do have a bit of an obsession with laundry. It's a chore I actually enjoy. Most of all, just like you mentioned - it's the blend of fresh smells that lure me in. :D Before reading your post though, I had no idea you could create those some inviting smells (and softness!) with essential oils and natural products.
Citrus oils are brilliant at increasing focus and reducing depression too. I'm thinking this would be one to try in the very near future!
I adore this post and have shared it. Thank you so much for these amazing DIY ideas my friend. ? Do you have a favorite go-to scent for your laundry?
Thank you! It's amazing what baking soda can do. It's perfect for just about anything! :)
That's a great idea with the citrus oils. Using lemon and oranges in the summer for refreshing smelling laundry would be so nice!
I love the scent of Gain so I'm going to try to replicate that with essential oils. Right now I'm using the lavender and eucalyptus and it smells so fresh and clean. :) What about you?
So THIS is why our towels smell like grape bubblegum, which is, of course, awesome :)
Haha! That would explain it! :D
We have hard water. I am going to try this. I love lavender.
Adding baking soda really helps with hard water. I hope you like this recipe! :)
I bet this smells so good!
It really does! It makes me actually look forward to doing laundry. :D
LOL me too, I Iove the smell in the laundry detergent isle, I tend to walk a little slower in that isle LOL. I love most of the scents you have here, lavender and lemongrass are probably my favorites, thanks for the combinations of scents you can mix, they sound so good. xoxo
I'm glad I'm not the only one who walks slowly down the laundry aisle!! ?? Lavender and lemongrass both smell amazing.
You're welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed it! :
This is an interesting idea Michelle !! ?
