May is filled with celebrations since there are two major holidays this month – Mother’s Day and Memorial Day. Along with those major holidays come some major sales.
Things are a little different this year, and while we might not be able to gather together to celebrate these holidays, we can still take advantage of the amazing sales prices.
I’ve put together an amazing list of the best things to buy in May to help you save money!
I’ve been doing all of my shopping online right now. I actually miss going shopping in the stores, though. However, I am getting cash back while shopping online with Rakuten and I’ve saved quite a bit of money by using Honey.
Honey helps you find the best prices while shopping online, especially on Amazon. You can also earn gift cards with Honey Gold and see the price history of an item you’re interested in. Another great thing about Honey is that you can add items to your Droplist and Honey will notify you when the price drops.

Best Things to Buy in May
Appliances: Memorial Day sales focus a lot on appliances, especially refrigerators. New models start coming in, so stores start slashing prices on the previous year’s refrigerators. Check Best Buy, Sears, and Lowe’s for the best prices.
- Tip: If you can’t shop Memorial Day sales, consider shopping for a refrigerator at the end of the month. Stores are desperate to get old inventory out the door, so prices usually drop significantly.
Mattresses: The best time to buy a new mattress is during a three-day weekend sale – President’s Day, Labor Day, and Memorial Day. Check out stores like Wayfair, Macy’s, Ashley Furniture, and Overstock for some great mattress deals. Even Amazon has some pretty good deals on mattresses.
Spring apparel: Stores are trying to push spring apparel out the door quickly in order to make room for summer apparel coming in. Check the clearance racks for even better deals throughout the month. Some stores, such as Kohl’s and Macy’s, have sales of up to 90% off during Memorial Day sales. Also keep an eye out for great deals at JC Penney, Old Navy, and H&M.
Home goods: With Mother’s Day and graduation upon us, home goods such as dishware and small kitchen appliances are going on sale. Look for crockpots, knives, and blenders. Bed, Bath & Beyond and JC Penney have great deals on home goods this month.
Jewelry: Jewelry prices tend to drop by as much as 70% after Mother’s Day. If you’re looking to score some great deals on jewelry this month, check stores such as Zales, Macy’s, and Nordstrom.
Furniture: Memorial Day also brings great deals on furniture. If you’re on the hunt for a new couch or dining room table, now is the time to shop. Check out stores such as Ashley Furniture, Macy’s, and Overstock online, and be sure to visit your local furniture store for even better deals.
Hamburgers: Yep! National Hamburger Day is May 28, so keep an eye out for hamburger deals and freebies at local restaurants.
In-season produce: Look for grocery stores to slash prices on in-season produce this month. Strawberries are in season this month as well as lettuce, cabbage, beets, radishes, asparagus, and turnips.
I hope this guide of the best things to buy in May will help you save some money while you shop!
What’s on your shopping list this month?
For many years when the month of May came along I would buying cards and gifts for three and also mothers day. My youngest brother has a birthday on May 4th. Mum and Dad were May 18th and 19th ,sadly they are now gone but never forgotten.
It seems like May is definitely a month for cards for you! We have a lot of birthdays in May and June so I need to start stocking back up. Thanks for the reminder!
Happy Days ?????
We have been putting off buying a new dishwasher. Maybe it is time to shop around. Thanks for the tips! ?
I was on the Best Buy website the other day and noticed they are having a sale on dishwashers. We were looking for a small one. Now is a good time! 🙂

You had me at appliances! We need a new refrigerator so I’m putting a reminder in for later in the month!! Thanks for the great tips!! Pinning!!
We’re looking for a new one to put in our kitchen for when we get ready to move but we’re not ready for it right now. But shopping online I’ve already seen some great deals, so I might just have to stash it in my mom’s basement. 😀 Thank you for pinning!
This year is going to be tough with Zoom meetings instead of Mother’s Day visits.
I know what you mean. My mom went to a drive-by birthday yesterday which made me think all of our holidays will become drive-bys now. haha!
I had a Zoom style birthday party back in April. Talk about weird.
Thanks for all this great money saving info! I’m consolidating my debt so I need to save all the money I can.
You’re welcome! I’m glad I could help. 🙂

I love Ashley Furniture, and have bought several things for my bedroom from there. I’m hoping for a freebie hamburger later this month!!!
I have been stalking their website during quarantine! 😀 There’s nothing better than free food, especially when it’s a hamburger. 🙂
I agree!
I miss shopping in the stores, too. But since I’m not, we are saving some money!
And I’m wondering when having yard sales will be legal…. I need to get rid of some stuff….
Liberty
I was thinking about that the other day. I have some stuff to get rid of plus I love shopping yard sales! 🙂

Thank you so much!
Great ideas, Michelle! Those 3-day sales are the best 🙂 I am missing in-store shopping as well!
Thank you! I thought I wouldn’t miss it as much as I do, but now that I can’t go shopping just for fun I really want to. 😀
I adore a great tasting cheeseburger with everything. I will be watching for the deal on this during May.
Me, too. Cheeseburgers have to be one of my favorite foods when it’s made just right! 🙂

Nice list you have here and I love shopping online with Rakuten, have received thousands of dollars back (mostly from when it was called Ebates). Thanks so much for linking up with me at my #UnlimitedMonthlyLinkParty 12, open May 1 to 26. All entries shared if social media buttons are installed.
Thank you! Rakuten is great for cashback. I used it when it was Ebates, too. I wonder why they had to change the name? 🙂
