Certain rooms in your home are known for using a lot of energy, but the bedroom isn’t typically one of them. There are not a lot of energy-wasting appliances in the bedroom and most of your time in the bedroom is spent sleeping with the lights off.

Saving Money in Your Bedroom

  • Use LED bulbs: Switching from traditional light bulbs to LED bulbs will help save money on energy as well as long-term savings. LED light bulbs last 25 times as long and they use 25-80% less energy.
  • Unplug: Appliances that are not in use can be unplugged to save energy. Vampire energy, also called standby power, costs consumers more than $3 billion a year! (source)  Plug appliances into a power strip and turn it off when they’re not in use to make it easier.
  • Close the closet: Leaving the closet doors open wastes energy because it’s inviting the air conditioning inside. Close the door and let the cool air stay in the bedroom with you.
  • Use a rug: If you have hardwood floors, cover them with an area rug to provide insulation for your bedroom.
  • Check your windows: Make sure to check your windows for any gaps or leaks. Also, keep your blinds or curtains closed during the day in the warmer months to keep cool air in and hot sunlight out. Open them during the colder months to let the sunshine naturally warm the room.
  • Paint the walls: If your bedroom walls are a dark color, consider painting them a lighter color. The lighter color the walls are, the better they reflect light, therefore you don’t have to turn on the lights during the day.
  • Install a programmable thermostat: Using a programmable thermostat saves around 10% each year on heating and cooling cost. Set your thermostat to no lower than 78 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer and no higher than 68 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter. Changing the way you dress according to the temperature will keep these temperatures at a comfortable – and affordable – level.
  • Buy secondhand: Look for used nightstands and dressers on Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, or family and friends for cheap or free. If they’re not your style, give them a coat of paint and change the hardware.
  • Save on sheets: Stock up on sheet sets and blankets during white sales at the beginning of the year. You really only need 2 sets of sheets anyway. When you change your sheets, put the other set on right away, then wash the first set, fold, and put it away.

  • Great tips! I never keep lights on in my bedroom unless I'm in there to save on energy and costs, but I have to say I sometimes fail at making sure the windows are closed after I've put the A.C. on. I kick myself every time!

    • I do that sometimes, too, especially if my cat is in the window. I feel bad for making her get down because she loves the birds so much! haha!

  • Great tips. I did not realized that there are so much wastage in the bedroom. You always have some unique and helpful ideas. Thank you.

  • This article is helpful for me to spend less money on the bedroom. My personal budget is to spend most of my money on studying and stationery.
My bedroom already has LED light bulbs. I am currently keeping a good diet that you mentioned in this article. Some of these tips can improve my study efficiency, such as painting walls with a light color, because students need enough light to study.
Also, this article is suitable for people staying at home during the challenge time. Thanks for sharing so much and stay safe!

  • These are awesome tips, Michelle! It's funny you should mention 'vampire energy.' Clueless as I may be - it wasn't until recently that I became aware of this concept. ??‍♀️ I should be better about unplugging stuff but it's not a bad habit I've broken yet. $3 billion is a huge amount of money! Think about how many hungry folks we could feed with that, wow!

You made a fantastic point about the light colored walls too. I used to love the coziness of darker woods, etc. I still do but am finding that lightening up the space also lightens up my mood. Have you noticed that? :)

Another fantastic post my friend! Always love your tips! ♥

    • My husband is terrible about leaving everything plugged in all the time, including his phone chargers. This scares me because I keep hearing stories of iPhone charges that are plugged into the wall but not plugged into the phone catching on fire because they spark.
I agree with you about the light-colored walls! It seems like when it's lighter the room feels bigger and cleaner and that lifts my mood. I've seen that dark colors are coming back for the bedroom, but I will not be following that trend!
Thank you so much!! I hope you have a wonderful week! :D

  • Awesome tips, I did not realize not closing the closet is actually wasting energy and I always leave unused appliances plugged in. Time to change that. Thank you for sharing

  • Great tips! My bedroom is a little different because I'm in the roof and it isn't connected to the same heat supply as the rest of the house so there's very little to waste up there, just a storage heater that only goes on during winter. I do forget my phone charger occasionally though! Forever trying to work on that x

  • Simple but fab ideas, I'm definitely one that always has to turn everything off!

  • Awesome tips as usual! I need to start unplugging appliances after reading this! Love the fact that you mentioned only two sets of sheets, I’ve gotten to where I’ve really been purging and I know that just having a few things is effective ..because like even in the kitchen who needs six or 12 pots when you only have four burners anyways LOL and I hardly ever even use the four burners at one time anyway!!!!

    • Haha! I know what you mean! I recently went through my small kitchen and got rid of a box full of stuff. I had so many big utensils that I never use! Don't ask me why I bought them. I guess I thought I was going to become a chef someday. :D

      • Haha and I bet there’s so many others who can relate to us!!....maybe ‘the kitchen’ should be your next “tip” series? that could be a never ending post series!!?
