Deep Clean Your Master Bedroom

If your bedroom is starting to become a less than favorite place to be, follow these tips on how to deep clean your master bedroom. Bring back your peaceful bedroom today!

When Spring arrives and the weather starts warming up, I always want to clean my house. I like to wait until it’s warm enough to leave the windows open so everything can air out.

Right now my house is quite a mess with the bathroom renovation going on. (A little update – we finally got all the walls up after a lot of hard work! Now they need sanding and painting.)

Giving your bedroom a quick once over weekly will keep it pretty clean, but you still want to give it a deep clean every once in a while. If you have allergies or lots of pets, you may want to deep clean your bedroom seasonally.

So how do you deep clean the bedroom? Well, I’m so glad you asked!

Why do I have to clean anyway?

Physical Health

Breathing in dust particles and unclean air isn’t healthy for anyone. What is dust? “Two-thirds of the dust in your house comes from outside, as dirt tracked in on your feet and airborne particles like pollen and soot. The rest is mostly carpet fluff, clothes fibers, and pet hair.” (Science Focus Magazine)

It’s estimated that people who make their beds every morning are 19% more likely to get a good night’s sleep on a regular basis.

Also, 75% of people surveyed by the National Sleep Foundation said that they feel more comfortable and get a better night’s rest when they have clean sheets.

Mental Health

A 2010 study showed that “women who described their living spaces as “cluttered” or full of “unfinished projects” were more likely to be depressed and fatigued than women who described their homes as “restful” and “restorative.” The researchers also found that women with cluttered homes expressed higher levels of the stress hormone cortisol.” (Psychology Today)

This is so true for me! When my home is cluttered I cannot concentrate, I am stressed out, and I feel so overwhelmed!

In 2011, researchers at Princeton University found that clutter can actually make it more difficult to focus on a particular task. Specifically, they found that the visual cortex can be overwhelmed by task-irrelevant objects, making it harder to allocate attention and complete tasks efficiently.

So now that you have a better understanding of why it’s important to keep a clean bedroom for health reasons, let’s get started on how to deep clean the master bedroom.

Deep Clean the Master Bedroom

Are you ready for a clean bedroom so you can have a peaceful night’s sleep? Here’s how to do that:

  1. Start with the 15 minute clean up guide, which will help get your bedroom into a functional place for you to begin.
  2. Dust the corners of the bedroom as well as the ceiling. Don’t forget about the walls, air vents, doorknobs, light switch plates, and any wall art. When dusting, work from top to bottom, left to right so you’re not scattering dust over already clean surfaces.
  3. Clean the ceiling fan by dusting first, then cleaning with a gentle cleanser. Murphy’s Oil Soap diluted with water works well for this. Take the light fixtures down and wash them off. Let them dry completely before replacing them. If the ceiling fan is piled with dust, put a pillowcase over the blade and slide it off. The dust will come right off into the pillowcase.
  4. Remove curtains so they can be washed and dust off the blinds. Dust down and clean window sills and corners and wash the inside windows and the outside if you can. Rinse the window screens if you’re able to remove them. (I love my chemical-free e-cloth for cleaning windows and mirrors!!)
  5. Wash all bedding which includes sheets, blankets, comforters, mattress pads, pillow, etc. Vacuum your mattress and flip it over so that it wears evenly and lasts longer, then vacuum the side that’s up. While your mattress is up, now would be a good time to clean under your bed. Put clean linens back on your bed and make the bed.
  6. Dust lamps and clean them well. Vacuum lampshades and dust off the lamps and any decorative items sitting around.
  7. Dust off dressers and nightstands. Clean any glass and mirrors.
  8. Clean the floor. Sweep and mop if you have hardwood floors, vacuum, and spot clean mildly soiled carpets. For heavily soiled carpet, consider a professional cleaning or do it yourself with a carpet cleaner.
  9. Sort through closets and drawers using the four-box method (trash, donate/sell, storage, keep). Put items back that you plan to keep in the bedroom.

Tips:

  • Declutter closets first or save them for last. Don’t try to do them in the middle of your bedroom deep clean. You’ll end up distracted and get nothing done.
  • Go through your shoes, clothing, and accessories in your drawers and closets and pack away seasonal items that are taking up space.
  • Listen to an audiobook or music to help pass the time and make cleaning more fun.
  • Don’t skip cleaning under the bed!

By following these tips you will be able to deep clean your bedroom and have a clean bedroom that you will love. A clean and organized room is relaxing and less stressful, so you’ll get a wonderful night’s sleep.

  • Good tips. I cleaned peoples homes for 17 years. You cannot tell it by my bedroom. I change my sheets weekly, and put things away daily. But this is very different than actually cleaning it. Right now, I have nothing but time, and I am simply. Not. Motivated.
