Last week was my mom’s birthday, which just happened to fall on Friday the 13th. We celebrated on Sunday with a small cookout and afterward enjoyed cake and ice cream. Being able to sit down with them and just catch up was nice since that hasn’t happened since Christmas!
For her birthday I made her a cute little cactus flower pot. Dollar Tree has a lot of fairy garden figurines and I thought one of these gnomes would be perfect for the flower pot!
Aren’t they adorable? I used the gnome on the right with the watering can because I thought that would be perfect beside the cactus.
Dollar Tree also has chalkboard wood stakes so I grabbed a pack while I was there. I thought I would use one to paint words on it and place it in the pot beside the cactus.
Let me show you how I made this adorable cactus flower pot for my mom, Then you can run out and gather your materials so you can make one, too!

First, give the terra cotta pot a coat of paint. I used a dry brush for this step. The paint dries fairly fast on the terra cotta. After the pot is completely dry, paint with another coat, then let it dry completely.
However, you can just do one coat very lightly if you’d like a more rustic look.
Next, you’re going to add the jute string around the top. Add a dab of hot glue to get started and stick the end of the jute string to it. Let the glue dry for a few seconds, then start wrapping the string around the pot. I added a dab of glue here and there to keep the string from falling off.
Now it’s time to paint a cute little saying on the chalkboard wood stake. Since I chose a cactus for the flower pot, I decided to paint “Can’t touch this” on one of the stakes. Pretty clever, huh?
First, I wrote the letters onto the chalkboard with a pencil, then I traced over the letters with a paint pen.
Next, fill your cactus flower pot with the potting soil almost to the top, but don’t fill it up all the way. You want to make sure there’s enough room to add the cactus. You can always add more after the cactus is put in.
After adding the potting soil, place the cactus gently down into the soil. You may want to wear gloves for this part like I did because the cactus is very sticky.
Next, add the gnome and the painted chalkboard wood stake.
That’s all there is to it! I love how it turned out and my mom loved it, too!
Here are some other great sayings you can put on the wooden stakes:

That is adorable! I love it! :)
Thank you so much! :)
I saw those cute chalkboard stakes, too! And I like that sometimes you can get things like your pot elsewhere for less than a dollar if you're paying attention!

Yes! I got mine at Walmart for 88 cents! :)
What a cute gift idea. I am definitely going to be doing this at some point.
Thanks Michelle.
Thank you so much! It's fun to add cute little decorations any way you want.
That a really cute idea :-) Love cacti but I seem to kill them too :D
Thank you so much! The secret to making a cactus live is neglect apparently! haha! I had one that wouldn't die even though I hardly watered it and left it in the shade!
Ha ha I’ve killed several by water and by drought. ?
So adorable, Michelle!! I love the texture the jute adds and your wording is too cute!! Thanks for sharing!!
Thank you so much! This was a lot of fun putting together, too. :)
Cute gift! It looks easy enough to make, too!

"Can't Touch This!" ? I LOVE this DIY, Michelle! The combination of your little gnome choice and your painted saying -- what a perfect gift! I know your mom absolutely loved it and got quite a kick out of it. This is truly brilliant!
Is that dogwood blooming behind your finished project in the one photo? It's a stunningly beautiful tree in bloom! That photo looks like it belongs on those stock photo sites.
You've done it again my friend. Absolutely adorable. And I hope you had a wonderful time hanging out with your folks, enjoying a beautiful day. ?
Thank you so much! She did love it and thought it was funny. :D
It's a magnolia tree. It's my favorite tree in our yard! It smells so good when it blooms and when the petals start falling off the ground turns pink. When we move I want to take it with me! haha!
You're so sweet! Yes, it was really nice hanging out with my parents for a little while. We have been in and out (mainly to take showers while renovating the bathroom), but we haven't had a chance to just sit and talk. So it was really nice! :)
