Last week was my mom’s birthday, which just happened to fall on Friday the 13th. We celebrated on Sunday with a small cookout and afterward enjoyed cake and ice cream. Being able to sit down with them and just catch up was nice since that hasn’t happened since Christmas!
For her birthday I made her a cute little cactus flower pot. Dollar Tree has a lot of fairy garden figurines and I thought one of these gnomes would be perfect for the flower pot!
Aren’t they adorable? I used the gnome on the right with the watering can because I thought that would be perfect beside the cactus.
Dollar Tree also has chalkboard wood stakes so I grabbed a pack while I was there. I thought I would use one to paint words on it and place it in the pot beside the cactus.
Let me show you how I made this adorable cactus flower pot for my mom, Then you can run out and gather your materials so you can make one, too!

This DIY was featured here and here!
First, give the terra cotta pot a coat of paint. I used a dry brush for this step. The paint dries fairly fast on the terra cotta. After the pot is completely dry, paint with another coat, then let it dry completely.
However, you can just do one coat very lightly if you’d like a more rustic look.
Next, you’re going to add the jute string around the top. Add a dab of hot glue to get started and stick the end of the jute string to it. Let the glue dry for a few seconds, then start wrapping the string around the pot. I added a dab of glue here and there to keep the string from falling off.
Now it’s time to paint a cute little saying on the chalkboard wood stake. Since I chose a cactus for the flower pot, I decided to paint “Can’t touch this” on one of the stakes. Pretty clever, huh?
First, I wrote the letters onto the chalkboard with a pencil, then I traced over the letters with a paint pen.
Next, fill your cactus flower pot with the potting soil almost to the top, but don’t fill it up all the way. You want to make sure there’s enough room to add the cactus. You can always add more after the cactus is put in.
After adding the potting soil, place the cactus gently down into the soil. You may want to wear gloves for this part like I did because the cactus is very sticky.
Next, add the gnome and the painted chalkboard wood stake.
That’s all there is to it! I love how it turned out and my mom loved it, too!
Here are some other great sayings you can put on the wooden stakes:
What quote would you add to your cactus flower pot?

This a cute idea for me to try while self-isolating. I'll have to get my partner to pick up the necessities for this.
Thank you so much! I do the same thing. I'm not leaving my house right now. ?
Well, there's the obvious right now "I'm practicing social distancing!" Ha :-p
Haha! Me, too! But then again I usually do that anyway. ?
Ha, yeah, and the pot might get broken if I hurl to the giftee from a distance LOL ...and I have terrible aim!
Hahaha!!!!
I always love your ideas. Screenshot taken, definitely for the keep. ❤
Thank you so much! I hope you have as much fun making yours as I did! :)
You are welcome ma'am. ?
Yeah. I look forward to that too. ?

I wasn’t receiving your blog post updates and couldn’t figure out why. Now WP is telling me that I wasn’t following you which is strange because I didn’t unfollow you. So I re-followed from my phone and hopefully I get your updates now. *Sigh* ?♀️
That has happened to me before with other blogs! I've been having a lot of issues with WP lately. It's not letting me comment on a lot of blogs, but I can on some. It's so frustrating! Hopefully it gets fixed soon!
Now is showing that I left two multiple comments when I only submitted it once. I’ve been following you since I discovered your blog so it’s so strange. I might switch to working solely from the laptop instead of using the App.
It's only showing one here so all is good. I had to get rid of the app, too, but I've been having issues on my laptop and my phone without the app, too. I've heard others complaining about the same things. It's really strange.
it's so cute!
Thank you so much!!
Super cute! The name is also quite appropriate for the times too ?.
Thank you so much! haha!! Yes, it is! :)
Very cute. Never considered decorating the pot. Thanks
