I love repurposing things I already have and turning them into something better. Check out how I reused an old mailbox and turned it into an upcycled mailbox planter!

When I first moved into my house many many years ago, there was an old mailbox next to the front door. I’m assuming the lady that lived in the home before had planted flowers in it since it was full of dirt. And spider webs.
We took the mailbox down a while back and it just laid around collecting dirt and dust. I wanted to do something with it, but I wasn’t sure exactly what. I wanted to paint it, but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to go bold or stick with black.
After thinking about this poor abandoned mailbox for weeks, I finally decided what I wanted to do with it.
You can see how badly the mailbox needed cleaning up. It had a few spider webs along the top and it was quite dusty and dirty.
The first thing I did was clean the mailbox up really well. I only used soap and water for cleaning the mailbox this time because it wasn’t horribly bad. Then I wiped it off with a dry cloth and let it sit out in the sun to dry.
After the mailbox was dry I gave it a coat of black spray paint. I used Rust-Oleum spray paint in black for this upcycled mailbox planter since it is going to stay outside.
Just one coat did the trick since the mailbox was already black to begin with.
It may look a little strange in the picture because we have a wire hanging from a board under our front porch that we hang stuff on to spray paint. This works so well because then you don’t have to keep turning your project if it’s laying down.
However, it’s not such a good idea when the wind is blowing. But then again spray painting in the wind isn’t a good idea, either.
Trust me.
My husband placed the upcycled mailbox planter near our front door with screws so it would stay. Then I had the fun part of decorating it.
The flowers and greenery I used are all from Dollar Tree. This side of the house doesn’t get much sun and since it’s technically still winter, I didn’t want to plant real flowers yet. Maybe in the spring.
I added a tiny grapevine wreath with a bow to the bottom of the upcycled mailbox planter because I thought it needed something extra.
