It’s time for another home renovation update!
The days are getting shorter, which is giving us a lot less time to work on renovating our home. We’re doing what we can outside while it’s still light out in the evenings and in the weekends. My husband cannot take too many days off right now to work during the day because they have a huge project going on where he works.
We are almost completely done with the foundation work, we are just waiting on our guy to come out and put the dirt back in its place. The drain pipes have been laid, the gravel has been poured, and more fabric has been placed on top of that.
The Process
These are the pipes we used to make the drain. The holes point down so that if the water gets up to them it seeps into the pipes instead of rising up the foundation.
A small layer of gravel went down on top of the fabric, then the pipe laid directly on top of that. At the end of the pipe, close to the dirt at the end of the next photo, we placed a pipe going straight up. The top of that will stick out of the ground a little bit allowing the pipe to be cleaned out easily if it should ever become clogged. (Fingers crossed that never happens!)
We had to wait a while before we could finally figure out how in the world we were going to get gravel in that hole to cover everything up. A guy mentioned a stone slinger company to my husband (Virginia Stone Slingers), so he gave them a call and they came right out.
This truck has been the coolest part of this whole process! The stone slinger guy controlled the arm of his truck with a huge remote control. He stood by the truck and used the controls to point the gravel in the right direction. Good thing we live right on the road!
Funny story: the owner of the quarry where the gravel came from had to come up and record this happening because nobody around here has ever seen this before. So him and my husband were both standing in the road recording rocks being slung at my house while grinning from ear to ear like little boys.
Okay, I won’t lie. I was pretty excited, too, because did I mention how cool that truck is? Rocks are being thrown from the truck that is controlled by remote! What is not cool about that?
Okay, enough about the stone slinging.
This is beside the house looking along the front. You can see how much gravel he was able to put down with one load. I think it ended up taking a total of 3 loads to get it all done.
After the gravel had filled up most of the hole, we had to put another layer of fabric on top to keep the leaves and dirt out as much as possible. That allows any water to flow through the rocks and not sit in one place, causing any more damage.
In the photo below you can see how much gravel missed the hole. We spent an entire Saturday afternoon trying to get most of that gravel out of the dirt and onto the top of the fabric.
We shoveled the gravel along the sides and closest to the hole as much as we could. Then we used a giant homemade sifter to sift the dirt from the gravel. We would fill up a bucket with dirt and gravel and pour it in the sifter, then move the rocks around until most of the dirt was out. When we put the dirt back and level out the front yard we don’t want a bunch of gravel in it.
Even Leroy helped!
He hates when I’m outside and he’s inside. He cries the whole time!
Now the gravel is done and our next step is to get all that dirt back! Once again we’re waiting on our guy to come out with his machine that will make this job so much easier. The worst part is having to wait on people!
We even left a nice little surprise for the next owners of this house if they have to dig down for any reason.
Since finishing this part of the project we have had a few days of really hard rain. So far everything has worked perfectly and the basement hasn’t leaked once!!
We’ve also been working on other projects as well, but that’s for another post. I don’t want to bore you with a super long post.
While all of this is going on, my mother-in-law had surgery for breast cancer. She is home and doing well now, but she has 3 more surgeries to go. Two days before her scheduled surgery her dad had to be rushed to the emergency room. He was unresponsive and extremely dehydrated. To make a long story short, he had quit taking all of his medications, one of which was Flomax for an enlarged prostate. He was struggling to use the bathroom, which was causing him to pass out and have mini strokes. I have no idea how long he has been going through this, but the doctors said it has been over a year.
Assisted living is his next option so that he will be well taken care of. In the meantime, hopefully a home health nurse will be able to come in and check on both him and his wife.
Any prayers for both my mother-in-law and her dad are greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Right? I wanted to take over the remote and sling rocks all over town! 😀 Thank you so much for your prayers!!!!
Hahaha!! Now that would have made a great blog post!! ??
Sending love and prayers for your mother in law and her father. That’s incredible how you’re doing the house, it’s going to be so perfect when you’re done. <3

Wow! I can’t believe all that you have been doing with the house! I guess you knew it would be a big undertaking when you started. But still, wow! I love the smiley faces you guys drew! And I am sorry that you also have other family issues going on as well. I will be praying for your m-i-l and her dad! ?
Yes, I did know it would be a big project, but I honestly didn’t realize how huge it would be until we got started with everything. Especially when little surprises keep popping up that need to be fixed immediately. Thank you so much for your prayers!! 🙂
So much going on for you now! I do wish your mother-in-law and her father all the best; I can’t imagine how stressful this all must be. And what a little cutie Leroy is!!!
It’s so busy plus Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up! OMG! I might have to take next year off. LOL Thank you! Leroy needs a bath and a haircut ASAP! 😀
Really sorry to hear about your family troubles. Wishing you all the best. Leroy is adorable. And the whole gravel thing is pretty cool!

Whew, this looks like a lot of work. I bet you’ll be glad when the foundation work is complete.
Yes I will! It’s been the most challenging part so far. And the longest!
Prayers are sent for your Mom and her Dad.
Wonderful job on the renovation.
Thank you so much for your prayers!!
Thank you! This part has been the most challenging. 🙂
You all have done some hard work! Great job! It looks wonderful!
Thank you so much!! 🙂
Foundation looks great. Great truck. Best to you all, your mother in law and her dad. So much to deal withat one time. You are amazing.
Thank you so much! That means a lot to me. 🙂 The truck was really cool! I wish he would have let me play with it! haha
Michelle, your renovation update was much appreciated. I am amazed by the effectiveness of your plan.
Your family is on my prayer list as well. God is watching over all of us.
Thank you! And thank you for your prayers as well! 🙂
Oh goodness Michelle, your plate is really full right now! Prayers for your family, that is a lot to deal with all at once, not to mention as you are doing this hard remodeling work! Wow, what a big project! I can’t imagine doing that without a crew of help! Funny about the guys excited about the rock truck, and Leroy is adorable! Godspeed to your family…
Jenna
Thank you so much for your prayers! And Leroy thanks you, too, although he is in major need of a bath and a haircut right now. 😀
You put our water line replacement in perspective. 🙂
😀 This has been quite a project! One I hope I never have to deal with again. And I hope you never have to deal with the water line again, either. That’s a big project, too.
Wow wow wow Michelle! Bless your heart! You have been extremely busy! And I am so deeply sorry to hear about your mother in law and her dad. What a terribly difficult time for you and your family. ?
I must say though – that rock slinging truck is pretty darn cool indeed! The speed in which it got that project done alone is a huge help. Without it, Heaven only knows how long that would’ve taken.
And that Leroy – oh goodness, he melts my heart 🙂 So cute that he whines if you leave him in while you’re out. Sounds to me like you’ve got a shadow!
Praying for you & your family Michelle. I know you need a break!
I agree! Without that truck we would still be out there shoveling rocks into that hole 3 years from now! 😀
Leroy is quite the little mess. He’s been my shadow since we got him as a puppy. I can’t even go to the bathroom without him following along. LOL!
Thank you so much for your prayers! They mean a lot!! 🙂
Great play-by-play pictures! I loved the picture of your dog, too! Saying prayers for your family!
Thank you!!! And thank you for the prayers, too. We appreciate them! 🙂
You’re welcome!
Wow, that sounds like quite the project! I’ll have to catch up on the other updates when I’ve got some more time!
And cute little Leroy… can’t leave him out of the fun!
I will definitely keep your family in my prayers. Sending hugs (and purrs from Asami) your way.
The foundation has been the most challenging part so far! I’m glad it’s done finally. 🙂
Leroy thanks you! He’s a little mess. 😀
Thank you for the prayers (and purrs)! 🙂
So sorry to hear about your mother-in-law and her dad. Your family is in my prayers. Hope you get a chance to sneak in some renovations before the cold weather really sets in.
Thank you for your prayers! We’re trying to get as much as possible done before then, although it’s coming fast. Friday’s temperature is not supposed to get out of the 40’s!
So exciting to be nearly done with the foundations! I can only imagine how irritating the shorter days are for trying to complete such a big project. I hope your mother-in -law and her dad are doing well! x

Thank you! The shorter days really cut our work back, but at least we can do more on the inside during the evening. Thank you – they are doing better now. 🙂
It’s so much fun to follow your renovation process! 🙂 We bought an apartment that we renovated completely 5 years ago and even though it was tons of work, I would do it again tomorrow! I love how you basically get to design your dream home from scratch! We are talking about buying a house within the next 5 years and we would love to have an fixer upper! 🙂
Sounds like a big renovation project! Well done to you. I’ve done some large (ish) renos but mostly internal changes – never had to deal with foundations!
Thank you! It was a very long process, but thankfully it’s finally finished. I hope I never have to deal with another foundation. 😀
Sending good thoughts!!
Thank you so much!! 🙂
Hey Michelle! I started a new blog and I’m inviting you if you’re interested.
Yes, that would be great! Thank you!!
