Pumpkin Patch Sign: Fall Porch Decor

Do you have some scrap wood laying around that needs to be used up? Try this pumpkin patch sign to decorate your porch for fall!

My husband has a wood scrap pile that he just keeps adding to. He uses some occasionally, but I swear he hoards those wood scraps.

I’m not complaining because all those wood scraps paid off for me. I dug through the piles of wood until I found some I wanted to use. And then I turned those scraps of wood into a cute pumpkin patch sign for my porch!

Since I already had everything on hand, this cute little project didn’t cost me a dime to put together.

Pumpkin Patch Sign

What you need:

• 3 short wood stakes (I already had these, but you can get them at just about any hardware store.)
• 1 longer wood stake
• Craft paint (I used orange, red, yellow, and white)
• Paintbrush
• Pencil or stencils
• Wood glue

What you do:

Step 1 – Paint the stakes

Paint one of the shorter stakes orange, one yellow, and one red. I used regular craft paint for these, but you could probably use any type of paint you wish. Also, if you plan to leave your pumpkin patch sign outside where it could get wet you may want to apply some type of clear sealer.

Step 2: Write the letters

For the letters, I wrote them in pencil onto the wood by hand. I didn’t want it to be perfect; I wanted them to look handwritten. However, you can also use stencils for this part if you’re not comfortable handwriting the words.

On one stake I wrote the words “pumpkin patch”, on another stake I wrote the word “apples” and on the last stake I wrote the words “corn maze.”

Step 3: Paint the words

Using a fine tip paintbrush, paint the letters of your pumpkin patch sign. I like to outline the letters first and then fill them in with paint. This just helps me keep everything nice and neat.

Step 4: Sand the edges of the wood

After the paint is dry, take a piece of sand paper and lightly sand along the edges of the wood. I should have done this before I wrote the letters on because I was going for an aged wood look. When I tried to sand over the white paint it just messed it up the letters. Not exactly what I was going for. Live and learn.

Step 5: Glue the stakes together

Place your 3 smaller stakes on the larger stake to see where you want them to go and how you want your pumpkin patch sign to look. Once you’ve got everything looking the way you want, use wood glue to glue them down. After putting on the glue, find something heavy to lay on top of the sign, like another piece of wood or a heavy book. Let the glue dry completely.

I’m telling you to let the glue dry completely not because I think you’re an idiot, but because I’m the idiot and failed to do this. I waited longer than the 30 minute time limit suggested by the glue bottle, however the glue was still not completely dry. I picked up my sign and everything was going well until I started walking with it so I could decorate my porch. One by one the pieces started falling apart. Another lesson learned.

This is the glue that I used. I’m pretty sure my husband got it from Lowe’s since he lives there.

Step 6: Decorate

Now that everything is dry and glued into place, it’s time for the fun part – decorating with your pumpkin patch sign! I used an old flower pot and filled it with potting soil, then pushed the pumpkin patch sign down into the soil. The leaves around the sign and the scarecrow both came from Dollar Tree.

I had everything on hand for this project so it ended up costing me nothing! I love when I can make something from things I have on hand to save money.
