I have been trying to get rid of almost all of the store bought cleaning products in my home for years. My daughter was diagnosed with asthma when she was about 5 years old so she couldn’t have any harsh chemical smells around her.
Many of the cleaning supplies I have used in the past have caused major irritation to my throat and eyes, especially bleach. Some cleaning supplies have chemicals in them that have been known to cause cancer, and I would really love to keep that out of my house!
Over the years I have researched how to use natural homemade cleaning supplies. There are so many recipes for household cleaners, but I finally found the ones that work best for me. I also make my own carpet freshener, which makes my house smell so good!
I am sharing three natural cleaning supplies recipes with you today – all-purpose spray, mold and mildew remover, and carpet freshener.

This all purpose spray works amazing! It is one of my favorite natural cleaning supplies because I can use it on everything and I only have one bottle to carry though the house with me while cleaning. It works great on kitchen counters as well as in the bathroom. I even use this to clean my mirrors for a streak-free shine! There is no film left on the mirror from the essential oils I use in the spray.
Distilled White Vinegar
Water
Essential oils (I use lemon and tea tree)
Add equal parts water and vinegar to a spray bottle. (I use 1 cup water and 1 cup vinegar.) Add 10-15 drops of each oil. Use less if the smell is too strong for you, use more if you want the smell to be stronger.
To use this as a mold and mildew spray, make exactly like the all-purpose spray, just leave out the water.
1-2 cups Baking soda
Essential oil (I use lavender)
Pour baking soda in a small bowl, add 8-10 drops essential oil and stir to mix together. Pour mixture into a container with holes on the top for easy access. Sprinkle on your carpet and let sit for about 15 minutes, then vacuum as normal.
Tip: Parmesan cheese containers work well for this! I purchased a glass container from Dollar Tree to use for my carpet freshener.

Hi Michelle! Thanks for sharing these natural cleaners, I have wanted to get rid of chemical cleaners but wasn't sure what to use in place of them. Would I leave the carpet freshener on or vacuum it after? Okay, I admit I'm not too bright!?. I enjoy all your tips!
Thank you! I leave mine on for about 10-15 minutes while I'm cleaning something else, then vacuum over it. Glad to help! ?
Thanks Michelle! I find the chemical cleaners are starting to bother me and Muffin, so it's nice to have an alternative.?
I also make my own household cleaners with essential oils and have been very pleased with the results!
That's great! I'm so glad to hear that! ?
So cool! We are all about going all natural. God bless!
That's awesome!! ?
Good ideas, and money saving too, since natural products at the store are pricey
Thank you! Yes it does save us a lot of money. Store bought cleaning supplies get expensive!
Great ideas. My husband gets bad asthma as well. I will try these. I'm sure it's cheaper too.
Thank you! Yes, it does save a lot of money. I'm glad I could help!
Thanks for some great ideas!
You're very welcome!
I like the idea of baking soda/ lavender as a freshener. We sure could have used that last night...our household has been wrestling with a bout of the stomach flu!
Oh no!! I hope you all feel better! That seems to really be going around. ?
Thanks for sharing I need this cause I'm always afraid my pets might be allergic or react badly to my regular cleaners (they SAY all natural but I still can't pronounce anything on the back lol)
I agree! I have a dog and 2 cats and they've been fine with the natural cleaners I use. Glad I could help! ?
Oh very cool! Didn’t know that essential oils had anti-bacterial properties!
Thank you! I used to be very skeptical until I started using them more. ?
I'm all for this new way of cleaning! When I use my own concoctions rather than shop bought products, they seem to work so much better! xxx
Exactly! And they smell better, too. ?
